The Independence Memorial Hall is a monument which is situated in Colombo, Sri Lanka to commemorate gaining independence from the British rule on the 4th of February, 1948. This is located in the Cinnamon Gardens Colombo and this also houses the Independence Memorial Museum.
If talk about the significance of this iconic building, as I said earlier it was built to commemorate gaining of the Independence. The monument was built at the location where the formal ceremony marking the start of self-rule, with the opening of the first parliament by the HRH Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester occurred at a special podium February 4, 1948.
In the head of this eye-catching monument, you'll find the statue of the first prime minister of the country Rt. Hon. D.S Senanayake, who is also names as "The Father of the Nation". This was not only a monument but this also served as the ceremonial assembly hall for the Senate of Ceylon and the House of Representatives of Ceylon until the parliament was moved to the new parliament complex.
Currently this serves as a tourist attraction venue and a venue for religious events and annual national day celebrations.
This place is a tranquil and a soothing venue and I would say that this is an ideal place to start your morning with. As a teenager, I visit this place as frequently as I can just to feel the comforting warmth of the rising sun. Oh and did I mention, this place has a jogging path and a cycling path too. You can rent a bicycle and do your morning stretches and have your breakfast right here and have a great kick start. This place is surrounded by high-end restaurants and shopping complexes and many more attractions. You can have your breakfast from one of the restaurants located in the Arcade-Independence Square which I will be reviewing after this.
